Overview of Shonan Kaigan Park

Shonan Kaigan Park (Shonan Beach Park) is located in Fujisawa, the city known for the popular tourist destination, Enoshima.

Since the nearby Kugenuma seashore opened as a seaside resort in mid-Meiji era, this area became a popular destination for beach-goers during the summer season and attracted a lot of artists and people of culture.

It remains to this day as one of the most well-known spots in Shonan area, thanks to the fairly easy access from metropolitan Tokyo and the rich scenic environment it continues to be blessed with.

Shonan Kaigan Park has been constructed in 1951 as a part of a grand scheme originally planned in 1934 to convert the curved seacoast strip extending for 13.5 kilometers from the current cities of Fujisawa, Chigasaki and Hiratsuka to the town of Oiso into a huge park built on a vast 298.7 hectares of land.

Area around Surf Village

Area that gets crowded with surfers and beach lovers all year-round. The beach in front of Surf Village is often used as a site for holding marine sports events, including beach volleyball.

Nie-Er Cenotaph

This is a monument built to commemorate Nie Er, the pioneer of modern Chinese music best known as the composer of the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China, who was found dead in 1935 while swimming in the sea around this area where he dropped on his way to France, which he had allegedly chosen as the country to flee from China. His hometown, Kunming (in Yunnan Province, People’s Republic of China) and Fujisawa have long been maintaining close mutual ties under the friendship city agreement.

Peace Statue

Constructed in 1965 as a monument to pay tribute to the spirits of the war dead who laid the foundation of this country since the Meiji era and to reflect the earnest desire of the citizens of Fujisawa to never go into war and repeat the tragedy and agony brought by it. (Moved for a hundred meters or so from the position where it was originally built.)

Shibafu Hiroba (Lawn Area)

It’s all up to you to arrange your own way of enjoying the luxury of free space you can find here.
Chibikko Hiroba (Kids Zone)
A huge park installed with a series of large playground equipment that can keep children delighted and absorbed in outdoor recreation for a good while. Since the ground is sandy, there is little to worry about them getting scratched or hurt even when they stumble.
